Photo One goal at Kaiser Permanente is to help identify all prenatal patients who may have a problem staying off drugs, alcohol, or tobacco during their pregnancy.  The Early Start Program, which began in Kaiser Oakland in 1990, now has over 30 trained licensed clinicians as part of the OB team caring for all prenatal patients needing their services. This Program has expanded throughout the Northern California Kaiser system, which accomplishes 38,000 deliveries/year. It has been shown to decrease the need for intensive care nursery admissions and ventilatory support for these babies. Early Start is widely accepted by both providers and patients as is shows full respect and consideration for the patient and their needs.
